Food of the week: sesame

Toasted sesame gives a rich nutty flavour to many dishes and snacks. But what’s more, it’s one of the best calorie dense foods out there at 570 calories per 100g.

Practicality

Sesame seeds keep better than most nuts and seeds. Take a small bag of toasted sesame seeds to sprinkle over noodles or on oatmeal – they’ll last well for longer hikes.

How to use them

  • Sesame dressing is my favourite. So tasty! It comes in handy sachets and it’s great in sandwiches made with flour tortillas, for dipping sugar peas, or on hard boiled eggs.
  • Trail hummus: if you can find sachets of tahini, they’re perfect for adding flavour to scrumptious trail hummus. Or simply eat the tahini as a spread.
  • Sesame snaps are a pack lunch classic. These little bars of crunchy goodness travel fairly well so are ideal the trail and full of energy.
